Setting up VPN
Windows 7 - 8.1
- Download and install the NetExtender application
Mac
- Download and install the Java for Mac OS X application by running JavaForOSX.pkg
- Download and install the NetExtender application by dragging NetExtender into the applications folder shortcut
IOS
- Download and install the Sonicwall Mobile Connect App from the App Store
- Launch App and Add connection. (you cannot be on SMUS wifi while doing this)
- Name=SMUS, Server=https://vpn.smus.ca:4433
- Username = first.last, password = regular network password, Domain=SMUS
Connecting to VPN
- Run the NetExtender application
- Enter the following values:
- Server: vpn.smus.ca:4433
- Username: (your SMUS username, eg: chris.kloosterman)
- Password: (your SMUS password)
- Domain: SMUS
- Click the Connect button
- If you receive a prompt about the certificate being invalid (Mac only) click the "Always trust" button
IOS
- Launch App
- Switch VPN switch on
- Status will be Connected
Using VPN
Once you have connected to the VPN using the steps above, your computer acts as if it is on the SMUS network. This means you can access file shares and internal-only websites that would otherwise be unavailable.
Network Drive (Windows)
You will need the path to your network drive to map it below. It is different depending on which drive you want to connect to and whether you are a student or staff member.
Senior or middle student H: drive | \\smus.local\dfs\studenthome\user.name (where user.name is your actual username) |
Senior or middle faculty/staff H: drive | \\smus.local\dfs\staffhome\user.name |
Senior or middle P: drive | \\smus.local\dfs\userfiles |
S: drive | \\smus.local\dfs\departmentaldocs |
Junior faculty/staff H: drive | \\smus.local\dfs\jrstaffhome\user.name |
Junior P: drive | \\smus.local\dfs\jruserfiles |
Windows 7
- Click the Start Button
- Right click "Computer" and choose "Map network drive"
- Enter the following values:
- Drive: (choose a letter)
- Folder: (path to the drive as determined above)
- Connect using different credentials: checked
- Click Finish and a login box comes up. Enter the following values:
- Username: smuslocal\user.name (where user.name is your actual username)
- Password: (your SMUS password)
- Click OK
Windows 8.1
- Right click the Start button and choose File Explorer
- Click the "Computer" tab at the top of the window and choose "Map network drive"
- Enter the following values:
- Drive: (choose a letter)
- Folder: (path to the drive as determined above)
- Connect using different credentials: checked
- Click Finish and a login box comes up. Enter the following values:
- Username: smuslocal\user.name (where user.name is your actual username)
- Password: (your SMUS password)
- Click OK

- In Finder, click Go -> Connect to network drive
- Enter the following values:
- Server address: (path to the drive as determined above)
- Click Connect and a login box comes up. Enter the following values:
- Name: smuslocal\user.name (where user.name is your actual username)
- Password: (your SMUS password)
- Click Connect
Disconnecting from VPN
- Run the NetExtender application
- Click the Disconnect button
